Sorry Francois, we discovered this after we cut beta1.  There is 
documentation in the CVS version of the comments plugin and README.

To get the number of comments you include the variable $num_comments in 
the template.  To do the link, you place a URL to the specific blog 
entry.  That will take you to a page that has a single entry -- the 
comment system kicks in from there.
