With flavours that just provide a collection of files, you can put
them into a directory yourself and it should work as it states in the
documentation.

You are correct in that the flavours that are just a collection of
files are likely to have been made prior to us adding flavour
directory support.

Peoples' web-servers are set up differently from other peoples'
web-servers. As such you'll find that media files that flavours
require won't have a standard place to live on your file system--it'll
depend on how your web-server is set up.

As such, you should expect to have to go through the flavour templates
and adjust them to work on your setup.

I haven't looked at blosxom in some time, so I'm not sure I can make
any guarantees along the lines of "all blosxom flavours will work in
pyblosxom as is". However, I do believe that most blosxom flavours
will work for the most part and will likely require some small amount
of tweaking.
