It doesn't look that ugly to me, but I'm not that attached to it
either. One thing I very much like about ?-parameters is that it makes
a clear distinction between true paths and the special function of
date/path filtering. As you stated in your example, a URL with
/dev/2003 is ambiguous. There's no way to know if it refers to /dev
items in year 2003, or the /dev/2003 category.

For that reason I support a syntax that separates the path and filter
parameters. The ?-parameter is just one option. Another option is to
have a keyword trigger the filtering. Maybe /dev/2003/filter/2002.
That even allows you to get /dev items from 2003 without conflicting
with /dev/2003 -- just use /dev/filter/2003.

Thoughts? Is there a better (hopefully shorter) keyword?
