For what it's worth, as one of the people who originally raised this
issue, here are my thoughts:-

    I raised the issue because I am using the wbgwiki.py plugin and
    wanted 'year' directories in that area, so I'm not directly
    affected by the blog issues being discussed in the plans above.

    I have worked around my problem by calling my year directories
    '2004 ', '2005 ', etc.  This required a couple of minor fixes to
    my plugin code but that was all.  Navigating the directories
    manually isn't too difficult, one can just use 2004? or 2004* to
    avoid quoting the path.

    A change that allows year directories in non-blog parts of the
    pyblosxom hierarchy would be all I need.
