I kind of thought that as I was posting...

The only difference would be that you would only need to store the 
mtimes of entries whose mtimes you wanted to override.

We could also put this functionality in the FileEntry code, if we wanted 
to avoid a plugin.  Have a dict of path->mtime mappings which got 
populated by something (a plugin?), which the FileEntry would check and 
use if the current path existed as a key...  Uh, I'm not really 
explaning myself well here.  Do you understand what I'm getting at?
