meta-tag information

Some search engines (not the good ones of course) use meta-tag information like description to help them determine the importance of links. What I am wondering is how would you put this information in the header of a single entry (permalink) page, but not in an index.html sort of page. Assume we have meta description information in each blog items entry. When we go to generate the html page it is going to generate the head.html portion, but we don't have access to the entries information yet do we?
