I like this idea, but how about just calling the file File.meta, that way
we can add what ever meta data we want.  If you we a simple key/value pair
style xml file, then plugins could add or ignore article metadata.

What I like about your idea is that if the user doesn't want advanced
metadata they can just work with the system as they do now.  The meta data
is created just in time so to speak.  It is also backward compatible.

I still think we are going to want more meta data than the file system can
provide.  For instance I think could be valuable to mark certain files as
drafts, and I think others could think other things they'd like to add. 
If the mechanism is flexible enough it could be extended by plugins.
