There are a lot of applications that allow one to consume FOAF data and identify relationships and transitive relations between people. Is what you mean?

I don't think there is any such etiquette tbh, but normally when I find out that someone has linked to me to say that they know me - normally discovered when I look at their FOAF file manually - then I reciprocate the link! But only if I genuinely know the person.
