new release

Hey folks --

For a long time I've held off on doing a release because I wanted a
3.4 release to contain new documentation.  And we don't have new
documentation yet :(.

But not having a recent release is inconvenient for everybody.  So
I've simply made the most recent CVS tip a 3.4.0 release.  Note the
dot-zero -- instead of so-called betas I'm just going to use minor
numbers from now on, and release more often.

You can get the release in the usual place:

I have not made an RPM, but there is a spec in cvs and if someone has
a RedHat or similar box and would be willing to build it, I'll upload
it.
