Launching external programmes (solved)

This is a follow-up to my previous message. After more investigation, it
seems that when the externally called application server was outputting
diagnostic messages to stdout (cout << "msg" in C + +), this was
causing the external application server to hang. I have taken these out
and replaced them with syslog calls, and the thing now works. The named
pipes get created, and SkunkWeb and the application server can talk to
each other.

This still seems strange, since you would expect the stdout output to
go into a bit bucket, rather than hanging the program. Also, it works
fine with stdout output on my workstation (where Apache and SkunkWeb
run as my user name rather than the apache user and group), so there
might be a configuration difference (e.g., apache user does not have a
shell in /etc/passwd?)

I will post another message if I get to the bottom of this.

Cheers,
Andreas
