Consolidating customers

Hello, For a variety of reasons, I have ended up with some customers who 
have been entered more than once with their names spelled different 
ways. I would like to consolidate the multiple records into one, but am 
having trouble. I tried to change the customer name on existing AR 
records, but when I click "Update" SL tells me "ERROR! Customer not on 
file."

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
