There actually isn't any way to express that in just XPath, you'd have to do it in XSL-T which means you'd have to retrieve all items and then just pick off the number that you want. Yesterday I requested a feature for DB XML to enable retrieving ranges of query results, that would help quite a bit with this, otherwise it's quite inefficient. Right now if you post infrequently you should probably just increase frontpage-term from 7 days to something larger.
