I guess it's easy enough to add a <modified> element manually when i 
edit an entry and barring that
just use a conditional to determine whether there's a modified element 
or not and fall back to pubDate.

But i'd still like to know if you would like to build a modified element 
into syncato or not.

I also think i've figured out how to pick the top item off a sorted list 
in xsl.
