xpath query oddities

After struggling with getting something loaded into the db using the  
berkeley db backend, I switched to file. For now, so far so good.

However, I cannot get the xpath // query to work.

I have but one document, with heavy markup, in the system so far. I'd  
like to query it various ways.

I can do literal matches:

http://roland.mindlace.net/WK/blog/item/title

http://roland.mindlace.net/WK/blog/item/description/work/excerpt/ 
context/character

But when I want to search for all characters, regardless of their  
container, it doesn't work:

http://roland.mindlace.net/WK/blog/item//character

Am I doing something wrong?
