>>There seems to be a blossoming of browsers at the moment, from Apple's
Safari to various Gecko/Netscape variants. These new browsers are being
deployed in kiosks, iTV and mobile devices, using JavaScript is limiting
your audience to the desktop. It's forcing your potential customers
(people who really want to give you money) to go somewhere else.
In fact, the Gecko/Mozilla/Netscape javascript implementation is
becoming the reference. The js engine, "Rhino", is easily embeddable and
drives the scripting engine for hundreds of projects beyond web
browsers.
Proper standards compliant ECMA-Script is a very valid way to provide
more usable websites (see the Wrox book, something like "Improving Web
Site Usability with Javascript").
The key is to use w3c standard methods like document.getElementById and
not IE proprietary methods like document.all.
That said, you will need an alternate strategy for text only/handheld
device browsers -- but you'll need that even if you don't use
javascript.
