It's Jeff Patton at OOPSLA too (the usage-centred design tutorial I mentioned earlier). I'm hoping to be able to sit on it, but I am curious to know if he talks much about user observation and other direct contact with users? I know that Larry Constantine prefers what he calls "contextualization" to doing user research and usability testing. What is Patton's take on this?
