I think what I meant was that the one set of standards defined by W3C
comes in several flavours and that we need to consider if the latest
standard or an earlier standard is more or less appropriate.

There's no point making a case for the latest standard if the commercial
situation under consideration, e.g. target audience unable to use the
more standards compliant browsers, means that it is commercially
unviable.

We're arguing that adopting a web standard, any web standard, (as
defined by W3C) is better than no standard or coding for cross browser
compatibility using tricks, hacks and proprietary tags.

Aren't we?
