Funnily enough as I was driving to work this morning I was thinking along the same lines. I agree with Tony in all that he's said in this mesage.
So how about, instead of code or markup for (X)HTML os CSS that we use some non-specific word like *write*. The use of the word code for this activity is incorrect, as we've all been told, although that's what the majority of our customer call it, but markup has a meaning in, say, retail where you mark up prices - i.e. not a universally understood meaning of the word. A non-specific generic term like *write* would seem to cover it and get the message across, at least initially.
And then we have to look at other jargon. Any views?

We're discussing the correct use of terminology here, but one of the
major criticisms levelled at the IT industry is it's use of jargon.
Perhaps we should consider how to translate the correct terminology into
a language that business readers will understand as well.
Anyone got any thoughts on how best to do this?
The most obvious is that we should educate business in the correct
terminology, but I think that will be a non-starter in the short term.
