Some friends like W3C's Amaya, but it needs more work before it can really
be called "ready for the normal user".  Last I tried, it crashed a bit too
easily and had some user interface glitches.  Any programmers who have time
and want to do something really worthwhile could help it.

Those who were more used to a fancy HTML code editor seem to use Bluefish
now.  In the few occasions where I write xhtml directly, I too use Bluefish. 
It's not bad and has hooks that allow you to connect it to tidy or similar
tools.
