PHP is a server-side technology, but JavaScript is mostly used client-side...

Plus the fact that they often use JS unnecessarily and without any alternative 
means of accomplishing the same goal.  The Olympics site was a case in point.

I think the mantra when it comes to "bells and whistles" should always be "Is 
this really necessary?" Does the JS enhance the functionality (e.g. form 
validation) or is it merely a pet project of the developer/designer, who 
thinks it's "w4y k3wL".
