It's a subtle shading on the exact sequence of events for an IMAP 
"delete message" operation.

Thunderbird/Seamonkey have an explicit option to control this, and IME 
it's significantly faster to simply flag a message for deletion 
("redline", as you put it) rather than actually move it to another folder.

Outlook seems to take great delight in leading the way in confusing 
everybody in how to use it, by moving (almost) all of the options on 
*every* release.  (And regularly altering the results of some operations 
to boot, immediately after finally managing to get it right.)  Firefox 
seems to be pushing hard to match this degree of insanity...
