Hi, We used Akamai last December and we were very happy. The other thing you can do instead of creating new urls for your images is use CNAME in your dns and redirect all your image requests to the Akamai servers. There's also a nice interface to refresh specific URLs. If your application is mostly read-only or has lots of images, Akamai will give you a huge performance gain. On the other hand, if it has lots of editing pages or transaction pages, you will probably not get much. The only problem is that the solution is quite expensive.
