I have a feeling you have horked your installation in some way. My
guess would be that there is a piece of the Java-ObjC bridge that is
now non-operable because of the "downgrade".

Is a clean install of 10.3.9 much harder to do than a "downgrade"?
You would be on much firmer ground with a clean install.

I generate a lot of weird configurations also. It is not often useful
to find the specific cause of the symptoms caused by them.
