Which competitor's platform, growing in popularity, are you referring to?

Not only some.... but many (if you read The Server Side).

It seems to be a reoccurring flame.

Now that EJB3 is a spec, there will be, no doubt, a couple of 
different implementations.  So Hibernate won't be the only game in 
town... but, as it is, it's not a bad "only game in town" either.
