Re: WebObjects 4.5 to 5.x migration: benefits, experiences, advices

In contrast to Chuck Hill's comments, my experience moving from 4.5 to 
5.x was very positive. Admittedly, at the time it was rather 
problematic because of how buggy the first few 5.0 releases of WO were 
(they were horrendous!), but things have stabilized quite nicely with 
5.2.

 From a deployment perspective, the performance of the pure Java version 
of WO is significantly faster than constantly crossing the bridge with 
4.5. I remember hearing about some performance comparisons at WWDC 
years ago, and they were impressive. From personal experience, my 
application is deployed using WO 5.1 on Solaris and it's incredibly 
stable and reliable.

 From a development perspective, yes some of us actually _like_ coding 
in Java. As you say, access to a good debugger, better range of IDE 
choices, and a wide range of third-party Java tools is a strong asset. 
It's a huge benefit to us all to be able to integrate with the 
mainstream Java Web application development world with WO 5.x.

At this point, WO 4.5 seems so distant, and with Apple's poor record of 
supporting older versions of WebObjects, there is definitely a 
compelling argument to port WO 4.5 apps written in Java to 5.2.
