Re: Open source WO - offer

Heh. I both agree and disagree. My gut feeling regarding WO has been  
"run!" in the past. That's how Cayenne came to life :-) So yes, one  
most obvious and sane strategy with the whole WO situation is to get  
out of it completely.

Now the alternative... Redoing things happens often in open source.  
Contrary to the popular wisdom and despite (or maybe because) of the  
redundancy, this plugs well into capitalist economy and benefits most  
parties involved who are not in denial... and pays everybody's rent.  
The picture is not all rosy and all the potential players need to  
understand what they are getting into... which they do.

The full API compatibility goal is something totally different from  
any previous open source effort in WO Java - it would allow running  
existing apps and develop new ones without having to attend WWDC each  
year to check whether WO is discontinued. I assume that people who  
are still around the WO community are around not just because of deep  
emotional attachment. And it is good to see that some find compelling  
business reasons to do this.

Guess why this whoeverwhatever software is now used instead of WO by  
most if not all former big NeXT customers and former early WO adopters.
