That may have been the case at one time, but I have a hard time believing
that it still is.  NeXT did significant business in the financial industry,
and even after it was acquired by Apple, WebObjects had enough of a
technology edge to remain viable.  However with open source frameworks like
Tapestry, JSF (a spec not a framework, but you know what I mean), Cayenne,
Hibernate, and others, you have to squint pretty hard to see the advantages
of WebObjects.  Is it still better than the alternatives?  Yes.  Would I
still prefer to be using it if given the choice?  Yes.  But it's no longer
orders of magnitude better, and in some key areas, such as support for AJAX,
it's fallen behind.

I don't doubt that there are still many WebObjects apps chugging along and
being maintained in some large institutions.  But then again, there are
still thousands of COBOL applications out there being used every day.  The
question is, how much *new* development is being done in WebObjects?  How
viable is it to walk into a client and try to sell them on developing a new
project built on WebObjects?  In most cases, not very.

Before starting my own business, I was working for one large US consulting
firm. Are you aware that some (many) of the largest US finance sector
projects are WO based?

Probably european corporations are not so NDA-damaged, and we "leak"  
a bit more because we do not stumble across hoards of US lawyers ;-)
