Well in truth a role based system is what we
originally envisioned for this.

Unfortunately it's further complicated in my case
since the original authentication design called for a
users role to be an attribute not of the user, but an
attribute of the _relationship_ between the user and a
project. (I.e. The requirement is that a user could
potentially have differing roles depending on the
project he logs into. ) So in implementation,  the
User would have to authenticate against his User
entity, AND the project he is working on, before the
system can establish his role, and hence present a
tailored UI. 

But as you can imagine that seems like a 'giant leap
for mankind' from where I am- and I'm still here
trying to complete my 'small step for man' :-) 

And you are also correct in your assumption that I do
(eventually) want to authenticate against LDAP, but
I'll settle for authenticating against plain old
tables for now.

Well yes, at least this is the case. All this stuff is
already set up. After working through it for most of
today, I've almost got it running.   Hopefully
tomorrow....
