Thanks a bunch Denis and Gareth! Setting LANG=C is a good and easy workaround. Can't wait to get started. Installing Linux and UNIX programs (especially local installations on the university where I don't have root access) is my eternal grief - with compilation errors, dependency traps and post-installation trouble. Always nice to be able to bug the community with these things ;o).
