Hi,
Web services allow you to access applications (such as dictionary
definitions!) over the internet using an application transparent protocol.

What that means is you can access web services using almost any language
(Java, Perl, C#, C++ etc.) very easily - you don't have to know about the
dict.org protocol to use the dictionary service. In practice web services
use HTTP to transfer data - this means that the data can be routed over
proxies, used behind firewalls etc - Dict data can't easily do that.

As an example, the explorer at xmethods.net can use my service - this
happens automatically without any coding done at the xmethods site:

http://www.mindreef.net/soapscope/wsdldemo?referer=xmethods&url=http://servi
ces.aonaware.com/DictService/DictService.asmx?WSDL

A good introduction to web services can be found at any of the following
pages:

http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/WebServices.html

http://msdn.microsoft.com/webservices/understanding/webservicebasics/default
.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnwebsrv/html/webservbasics.asp

Hope this helps,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

It looks nice and functional, but I admit that I do not really
understand what it does and/or how it can be used.
Could you give some words of explanation?

Regards
Peer
