I don't remember either why the current implementation is so but
I'm sure it's not mandatory. The current implementation is really a
pain.

There's already a ticket about it and this should really be fixed :

If some people want to work on improving this, they're welcome :-)
Otherwise I will try to fix this but I have no time for this at all
just now.
