So I've added a method to a subclass of
zope.component.registry.Components for my own purposes:

    def queryAdapterOrSelf(self, object, interface, default=None):
        provides = providedBy(object)
        if not interface in provides:
            return self.queryAdapter(object, interface, default=default)
        return object
