I'm fixing a couple of issues with FSS at the moment because we have a
client that needs solid support for uploading and downloading very large
media files into Plone. From what I can tell after a couple of days of
investigation, it doesn't need that much attention - I hope to have it
pretty stable in a week or two.

I just fixed downloading via FTP - it wasn't streaming files. It does
stream files when downloading over HTTP but uses a mad 'getData' method
that returns the whole file when accessed through WebDAV or FTP or any
other protocol that uses PrimaryFieldMarshaller to get to file data.
