i'm uploading a design i somewhat finished yesterday. there are still 
many things to do but the main design looks very different (imo). and 
it's done with css. no template changes, at least "correct" removing of 
some site parts, which will not harm migration. will be available on 
http://ugar.niij.org/ in a few mins. it's a very basic site though.

so you see, it's possible to use a complete different layout with the 
tableless layout, yes and if you'd have seen http://csszengarden.com/ 
then you'd know that ;)

i'm not claiming we're as flexible as the css zen garden but at least 
almost (important note: we're not using unnecessary markup as the garden 
does).

it's not doen with css there, but it's doable without any problems.

use absolute positioning and floats for the menu. if you want a 
javascript driven menu, you have to customize it. if you want images 
instead of the tabs use 
http://plone.org/development/teams/ui/ReplaceTabsWithImagesViaCSSNoRollovers 
- the rollover version should be available soon because i have to use it 
on the ugar site.

if you really want to use plones full potential, you'll need to know 
css, at least a bit. w3c schools is a good resource, and zeldmans 
"designing with webstandards" is as far as i've heard, a very nice book 
for newbies. all links can be found in the plone 2 ui cookbook 
(http://plone.org/development/teams/ui/ThePlone2UICookbook) - thats the 
only way to get a real "eureka" moment ;) otherwise you're able to end 
up in migration pain (at the moment).
