I'm half with you. "-one" and "-two" can be construed to refer to code
position, and so they are better than ".left" and ".right". However,
"column" still refers to visual position/style. In www.getupgetout.org
#portal-column-one isn't a column at all (sorry to keep tooting my own
horn).

Now that is a separate issue and your point is well-taken. This is why I
haven't brought this up earlier. But I figured since Joe brought it up I
would jump in. ;)

Yes, we have a semantic naming scheme, but my point is that having a
semantic naming scheme is either:
1) Not flexible enough, because we are locked into a certain
semantics (visual or otherwise).
or
2) Ultimately non-human readable and therefore inefficient. A truly
abstracted and flexible semantic naming scheme would be something
like:
#div-whole-page
#div-one
#div-one-one
#div-one-two
#div-one-three
#div-one-four
#div-one-five
#div-one-six
#div-one-seven
#div-two
#div-two-one
#div-two-one-one
#div-two-one-two
#div-two-two
#div-three
#div-four
I suggest that at this point, we are truly abstracted and semantic, but,
ironically, by being truly semantic in terms of code position, we have
lost all human-readability and therefore we are killing efficiency. So
what I propose instead is this:
#alex
#joe
#tonico
#mike
#jan
#mirto
#myroslav
#john
#jakob
#michael
#geir
#olafmol
#chris
#chad
#tom
#henrietta
If we don't want to use our names -- cause it'd be too political or
whatever -- that's fine. We can name them after the Harlem Globetrotters
for all I care (http://harlemglobetrotters.com/players/index.php). The
point is that the completely arbitrary #hot-n-fresh will be much more
memorable than the completely semantic #div-two-one-one.
We need to make main_template our friend. :)
Am I explaining myself any better?

Don't be sorry ... I asked for it!
