yep.

no :) you're mixing up things here - we're bad because we named it 
column which is a visual term ;) xhtml semantics have nothing to do with 
the visual part. you're *not* bad if you use a portlet not as a portlet, 
thats actually what css is for. for example: it's planned that the 
search box will be a portlet in 2.1.
