that sounds very slow and not very clean. or like a portlet object. 
however, with the way portlets are currently rendered, the conditions 
inside the template, it's very hard to do what you want (if i get 
everything right). we've got to move the conditions and permissions 
somewhere else, in the best case in an action provider. if we have the 
conditions somewhere else we can check if there is anything to display, 
if not, don't display the column.

somehow, but not exactly. see PLIP11 
http://plone.org/development/plips/PLIP11 it's similiar but not aiming 
at portlets.
