http://www.alistapart.com/articles/sprites/ of the mezzoblue autror says
a bit about flickering and flicker-free rollovers. The idea of the
rollover is two actual background images in one file with different
offsets. And then placing image with negative offset backgrounf to
position necessary part in object rectangle. The described solution
should solve flickering problem in IE, save some bits of download of
GIFs, 8-bit PNGs as image header information and color palette being
transferred once only.

The described solution would be acceptable in colophon. I'd put all
buttons along with plone button in colophon.png one below one. and make the
plone button has 0 position, Section505 - -15, AAA - -30, XHTML - -45,
etc...

I'd even try to place all icons Plone is using in one icons.png file in
a matrix (with websafe palette), and then used that icons for links and
other iconlike images. We'd save greatly on download speed as it would
be only one request to server to fetch an image the overall page loading
time reduces greatly. Ask Limi, it was the reason to remove colophon
icons and to replace them with text/css buttons.
