Okay, I'll bite, as a complete newbie...

Why?  If there is another way to do it I would be very pleased to know. 
  I read the various documents about the Plone site and one or two other 
places and have tinkered, for example, with CSS to make some changes.  
And I would probably be able to get some more mileage out of CSS 
changes, so that different sections of the site took on different 
colours and so on.

But what we really want are different layouts per section.  We have 
some nice photos of our members on stage performing, and they won't all 
allow content in the same places - some photos are of a person down one 
side of a photo so the content would go in a large box to the one side, 
others have an artiste in the middle of the photo and we would want to 
put menu down one side and content down the other.  Some only have 
space for content along the top or bottom of a photo.

Some of these may indeed be static introductory pages with links 
manually coded into the database backed content areas, but if I can 
make reasonable 'templates' (well that's what I am calling them - it 
looks like I really mean 'layouts') to fit onto the photos themselves, 
we would like to use them for database backed content if we can.

But if I am making life uber-complex for myself, let me know and I will 
look at different options.  But I really would like to stay with 
Zope/Plone, and I assume that as I learn a little more I'll be able to 
find workarounds.  But I'll give your suggestion a go anyway (if I can 
work out the python script bit - that'll be my first one of those!).
