Re: plone multilingual

commuting from and to zurich together with Ogi I summarized some of the 
Ideas we had yesterday regarding changing LanguageIndexer using a 
fieldindex instead of a textindex



proposal:
usa a fieldindex for the LanguageIndexer so each content element can be 
assigned to more than one language.

usage:
to use multilingual the administrator selects a couple of languages the 
site will have translations for (site languages)

adding new content
------------------
as soon as a new content is added to the site its LanguageIndexer entry 
is set to all (selected list?) site languages.

this document is now the canonical document for all languages and will 
be show for all languages.

as soon as a document is translated to one of the sitelanguages its 
language code is removed from the canonicals document list of languages 
in its LanguageIndexer index.
For the translated document a LanguageIndexer index entry is created 
with a single language.
And it is marked a a translation for the canonical document.

For the remaining languages the canonical language will be used.

For all languages translations can be added until the canonical document 
has only one languge left.
As soon this stage is reached, no canonical document exists anymore for 
this document.

a number of situations are possible:

1. only the canonical document exists
     we just remove the document
2. some documents are translated
     we identifiy the canonical document by searching the one that has 
more than one entry in its LanguageIndexer index and add the language of 
the deleted document to it.
3. all documents are translated, no canonical document exists
     One of the remaining documents is elected to become canonical, and 
the language of the deleted document is added to its LanguageIndexer index.
     How this election happens should be configurable: One approach is 
that the default language is used.
     What happens when the default languge document is deleted ?
4. the canonical document is deleted
     We have to elect a new canonical document.

questions:
- How does the canonical document "know" what its language is? (as we 
only know which language it does NOT have)
     By its language field?
     What happes when this field is wrong (not existing language, 
conflicting language)
- what hapens when we add/remove language
- how is a user informed what thranslations exist for a document when 
sHe hit a document that sHe does not understand.
- could the same effect be achieved with less effort when new documents 
are by default language neutral and a "negative list"
     of languages is provided which languges that should not show the 
"neutral" document?
