These look nice at resolutions above 16x16 -- however, it is difficult
to differentiate between some types at 16x16 size.

At 16x16, visual language is sometimes stuck needing mime-type-neutral
skeuomorphism (e.g. a generic video == movie reel, audio == speaker
icon) or document-type-specific vendor logo-ish icons (for things like
MS Office documents or ODF documents).

Another option to borrow from are public domain icons from the
freedesktop.org / Tango Icon Library, but some of these icons look a
bit dated and many suffer some of the same problems noted above at
16x16. [1]
