since we are really trying to make default theme extra slim, awesome and modern
in all aspects of it, i would be sad to see that we would use images for icons.

we could have icons by applying some css using bootstrap 3 glyphicons[1] as
shown here with font-awesome[2].

i would prefer more optimized solution and future proof then going for some
fancy looking icons. i mean fast will always be sexy :)
