It think it would be a big change to force a single flat media space for images.
I think images in content space works well. Allows for galleries etc. Allows for organisation via folders.
It's made nicer when you can store them inside the page itself.

plone.app.drafts seems like the right idea. It allows for images to be removed if the save is canceled. But it doesn't look like its folderish and I'm not sure how it will work with the image popup.
