gettext, plural forms and plone

I come across the need to translate a text and use either plural or
singular form. I recognized, that we don't have a solution to this
problem in Plone. We can use conditions and use different message id's
in respect to the number of an item, but this is somehow foolish and not
the way to go. There are languages with more than one plural form. This
problem is described quite well in the GNU gettext docs:
http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual/html_node/Advanced-gettext-functions.html

Apparently, in Zope and Plone, we use gettext, but not ngettext or any
of the other tools, which can handle plural forms. There is a ticket,
which also addresses this problem: https://dev.plone.org/ticket/2018
(it's 10 years old!).

I won't fix it for this one problem I stumbled over, but just want to
re-raise the issue and ask, how other people are dealing with singular /
plural forms in Plone?

Cheers,
Johannes
