RPMs require RPMs?

After encountering several issues with building an RPM of Python 2.3.3 
for RedHat 9 (binary RPMs are only available for Fedora Core 1) I 
decided to build it from source. No problems. However when I then tried 
to install Plone 2 I got the following:

[[email protected] root]# rpm -Uvh Plone2-2.0.0rh-2.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
        /usr/bin/python2.3 is needed by Plone2-2.0.0rh-2
        python2.3 >= 2.3.3 is needed by Plone2-2.0.0rh-2
[[email protected] root]# ls -la /usr/bin/python2.3
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root      3369317 Mar 30 09:02 /usr/bin/python2.3
[[email protected] root]# /usr/bin/python2.3 -V
Python 2.3.3


I thought that this must surely be a bug. If I can see it in the path, 
why couldn't the RPM. And thus I entered an issue in the collector ( 
http://plone.org/collector/2945/ ) However it was rejected by 
"longsleep" with the interesting reason of  "As RPM is a package 
management system you need to install python2.3 from rpm as well." This 
is not true in my experience. Mixing installations from source and RPM 
can cause you issues further down the line in upgrading parts. However 
simply because one binary was installed via RPM and another from source 
does not mean that can't see or communicate with each other. That's the 
point of the path.

If the Plone team insists on Plone RPM installations on installing on 
RPM-installed Python 2.3.3 then this caveat should be clearly noted on 
the downloads page. It is not.
