Sorry for the long delay, too much to do ....

On Red Hat, based systems 'whiptail' is part of the package 'newt'.
I completely agree the most important point is compatibility between
Unix-workalike systems, that is also why I want to keep it as simple and
clear as possible.
Another idea could be, if we come to the decision that 'whiptail/newt'
will not work for us to make a simple menu interface just with shell/bash.

My idea for command line installs is something like that; we will not
change the setup we already have, people can still run:

./install.sh zeo

./install.sh standalone

that means people can still use the installer, like there are used to,
and also experienced ones do not have to see the new interface at all,
what we add/change is, if people run

./install.sh

in place of a message/error ' please run --standalone of zeo' they will
get a interface with links to documentation and a menu where they can
choose.

I will create a branch in my fork of the installer and will start
playing with it, between christmas and new year, and yes I will keep you
guys up to date !
