Thank you for the reply. Your explanation sounds entirely plausible, yet is also one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in a while. DAV supports the concept of a multi-status response; the reasonable thing would be to return one listing both reasons. If I had tried to upload a forbidden type, that is. If I had tried to upload an allowed type, but was not authorized, I'd expect a "not authorized" response, same as from millions of normal webservers around the world. It might, I suppose, be possible for me to dig into HTTP:DAV which is built of simpler prototypes, to make a version that would present credentials on the first attempt. Or spawn cadaver to upload a token first, which is a horrible kludge. This used to work. WebDAV is built into Plone - the wiki says it's an integral part.
