The thing I like about slack is that it's much easier to "be" in a slack channel because I don't have to monitor slack channels to the degree I did IRC (to the point that IRC has become impractical for me.) Information organization is hard. One organizes information to focus attention, but that also fragments it. There are too many conversations in the world to pay attention to all of them.
