The problem with ubuntu is reported to be solved by disabling the x
multibyte extension support in fluxbox.
This can be done by appending the --disable-xmb flag while doing a
./configure - since you say you compiled from source, this should be a
too big a problem ;)

It looks like the default locales on ubuntu are always utf, and sadly -
X doesnt handle utf fonts to well - flooding the font server with font
queries.
_Maybe_ changing the system locales (not just exporting the one
variable) to an iso-8859-X encoding would help to solve this while
avoiding recompilation of fluxbox, but i can give no promises since i
simply dont use neither utf, or xorg (being on debian - i dont really
have a good way to do that).
