Thanks, Simon... I tried the settings you recommended. They didn't work. But when I ran fbsetbg from the command line, I got an interesting echo, even as it set the new background -- to wit: wmsetbg warning: could not open domain file /home/~/GNUstep/Default/WindowMaker In fact, I didn't even have a GNUstep directory. So I set one up, with a Default subdirectory. Then I set up a (blank) WindowMaker file in it. That didn't help either. So I wonder if there's something in that WindowMaker file wmsetbg wants to see? And whether that is part of the larger problem I'm trying to solve? Oh well, back to work... With best regards, Pete -- Peter N.
